Our mind is the intangible part of our being the translates the "HOW" and "WHY" in our lives. Our body's eyes tell us what we see, a spider, and our mind's eye tells us how we see, creepy, killer monster. This is why I refer to it as our lens. I am aging myself, but we used to have sunglasses in different colors. They were awesome to wear and see how everything around you changed. After a while, we thought that we were seeing normal until we took them off. Then everything seemed strange again. This is how our minds work (in general).
Our mind translates for us and mediates between our body and spirit. When our body is in survival mode we demonstrate particular physical traits, but they do not act alone. This mode is activated by our response to our environment, how we perceive our environment. If we see our circumstances through the lens of threat and discomfort, our survival mode is automatically activated. It does not allow us time to decide if we are in danger or not. This is because we have already established a belief about this circumstance. This belief shapes the lens and the lens engages the body. If we do the hard work of analyzing our mind's lenses and try on different ones, we are able to challenge the evidences that created the belief and begin to rehabilitate it. If we change the lens, we change the outcome.
All of my study in Holistic Health and the newer medical approach of Psycho-neuro-immunology have demonstrated that the catalyst of change and healing is the mind. The work to change beliefs on their own is very difficult, but we can consciously and regularly "play" with our lenses to challenge and confirm our beliefs. This will help us to adjust them over time. Adjusting our beliefs is deeply spiritual work.
